Institute Report, Fall 2017

by West Region Institute Director, Linda Stansen, RA, CSI, CCS, SCIP

The Institute Board has been focused for the past 24 months on stabilizing the business and position of CSI within the design and construction industry.  Many changes in staff, leadership, and governance have been a part of this activity.  Changes and improvements that have been made so far include:

• Beginning a new governance approach to enable Board focus on results to be achieved

• Improved member service, (expanded phone support hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, M-F).

• A new website with online communities which have become very active in connecting members through social networking.

• Expansion of the National Science Foundation, (NSF), grant program from 2 community colleges to 30 which means that the CDT curriculum is being taught to an increasing number of students.

• Preserve and improve certifications; this includes conversion of the CDT from a certificate to a certification program – more about this below.

Sentences with Good Bones

BY BILL SCHMALZ, CSI, CCCA, FAIA

When evaluating old buildings for their renovation potential, architects sometimes say the buildings “have good bones.” By this, they mean that while much of the building’s interior, and even some of its exterior, needs to be removed and replaced, the building’s structure is sound and reusable. Architects value sound structures in their buildings.

Effective Architectural Sales Calls

BY Michael D. Chambers FAIA, FCSI, CCS

In my rather perverse perspective, I often wonder why so many product representatives feel ineffective or intimidated calling on architects.  Granted, some architects can be quite a treat. The terms argumentative, aloof, know-it-all, unapproachable, abstract, and “expletive deleted”, are often mentioned.  Have you ever stopped to wonder why?
