At LACSI we are educating and connecting people to improve design and construction. We continue to do this in so many ways: Our September and October Dinner meetings were full of people learning about LACSI and of course the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement from Arup’s team and how the innovative Belzberg Architects creates award winning envelope pushing structures. Both meetings brought a lot of guests, I personally enjoyed meeting them and learning about their interests. I look forward to seeing them as chapter members. Many thanks to the team of volunteers who bring these events together led by Programs Chair Monique Birault of University of Southern California. Consider inviting someone to attend as your guest, many product reps can sponsor an attendee.

A Dickens of a Tale
This is an update of a piece I first published in 2007. I tweaked it just a bit to update some of the references. I hope you enjoy it! Scrooge was an old man, set in his ways. And why not? He had been doing things the same way for many years, and the resulting success was sufficient evidence of the wisdom of continuing in that path. Whenever it was suggested that change might be a good thing, “Bah, humbug!” was his response. “I like things the way they are! I started this business, I’ve been doing things the same way for fifty years, and I don’t see any reason to change! All this new-fangled stuff is just a fad.” One evening, a strange series of events befell our dear Mister Scrooge. Having had a particularly trying day, he tried to enjoy a rich repast and a few glasses of wine in an effort to forget his problems. As he fell asleep, he was thinking of how much fun he had had in his youth.

Now I Sit Me Down
Michael Thonet is the inventor of the steam bending process first used on his famous bentwood Viennese cafe chair. His name is pronounced “Tawn-net” according to Witold Rybczynski in his new book, Now I Sit Me Down, From Klismos to Plastic Chair: A Natural History. This is just one tiny piece of the fascinating history of seating presented by architect and writer Rybczynski as he takes us from three legged stools of ancient Egypt, to Chippendale, Charles & Ray Eames, Hans Wegner, the Aeron chair, the Barcolounger and finally the ubiquitous, inexpensive injection molded plastic patio chairs sold at stores like Walmart. In both high-design and no-design chairs Rybczynski recounts the influence of new materials on their design, what makes a chair comfortable or not, and provides insight to the chairs designed by famous architects.

Specifying for Construction and Demolition Waste Management in Los Angeles
Section 01 7419 Construction Waste Management and Recycling. Construction specifiers, architects and others who prepare Section 01 7419 Construction Waste Management and Recycling specifications should note some important changes that are now in place regarding C&D requirements. State and local C&D diversion and disposal goals and best practices have been adopted to achieve CalGreen and local Zero Waste diversion policies. These requirements are in addition to LEED, CHPS, and other green building platforms, Matrix thinking is needed when writing clear and comprehensive C&D specifications for a new building project or renovation.
